GROW Coaching Model
– What is the GROW model in coaching?
Since the GROW coaching model was created by Sir John Whitmore and business coaches Graham Alexander and Alan Fine; it has been used extensively in corporate environments for great success, so we’re confident it can work for you too!
The coaching process includes four steps: Whether it’s new client acquisition, an increase in business or anything else you want to achieve grow coaching can be done internally (in-house) or externally (using a coach) to your business.
What are the steps of the GROW model template?
Goal Setting: The first step of the Grow Model is goal setting and this is all about asking yourself “What do I really want? What are my goals?”
Reality Testing: Reality testing involves questioning where you are currently in relation to your desired outcome.
Options: This stage is when you identify how you can move from your current reality to your desired goal. Including highlighting if there are any obstacles that may prevent you from achieving it.
You need to think hard about these obstacles. What could go wrong? Can I overcome them – will they be worth overcoming even with the risk involved?
This stage helps people set out clear plans which have been broken down into small achievable steps so that we can take control over our lives and businesses again!
Willingness and What Next: This is where you choose the options you are going to implement and include when you are going to achieve them.
Never forget without willingness your efforts will fail! So motivation is key!
Of course like all coaching, you will revisit the progress you have made on a regular basis. The GROW coaching model is a great tool for any HR department, for any coach or mentor.
When implementing GROW coaching
When implementing the GROW model it is worth noting, that once the person who is being coached has bought into the methodology they will in fact coach themselves to deliver on their promises. Fulfilling their targets and destroying their goals.
Sir John Whitmore
GROW is a coaching model which was introduced in the 1980s. The name was coined by Max Landsburg during an informal conversation with Graham Alexander, and was first published by Sir John Whitmore in his book Coaching for Performance.
Landsberg published it in the 1996 edition of his book The Tao of Coaching. Elsewhere Whitmore said that the model had been in use for some time before being given the name GROW.
As such, it is my understanding that GROW training would be of great interest to you and or your people.
There are various coaching models being used today
There are various coaching models in use today, including the GROW coaching model which was developed by Whitmore and Alexander at Harvard University in 1978. The WOOP model is a more recent development inspired by HOPE theory while collaborative helping maps are used extensively in family therapy. Although they have some similarities, these models all offer different perspectives on goal setting.
Is the GROW model template effective?
– Jonathan Passmore and Stefan Cantore, mentioned in 2012 that one major argument against behavioural-based approaches such as GROW is the perception of goal nature excluding philosophical discussion.
– It was explained that “as long as a person’s goals are lofty, they are less likely to focus on more practical or mundane aspects of life” (Passmore & Cantore).
It has been noted by Jonathan Passmore and Stefan Cantore, published authors in 2012, suggested one main drawback of this type of approach is the risk of exclusively having goals and purposes without allowing room for philosophical conversation.
Thus GROW may be suited to working in goal-directed areas of sports or business, but maybe less well suited to careers conversations, person–role fit or life-coaching conversations where other approaches such as the transpersonal or existential approaches may be more helpful.”[11] See also Whitmore, Kauffman & David (2013) for a response to this criticism suggesting that GROW has evolved to include transpersonal goals.
What is the best coaching model?
As a business leader, I am sure you are aware that there are literally hundreds of coaching methodologies and the GROW model is just one of them.
The GROW model has been used extensively in corporate life for over 40 years with great results.
The best coaching model is the one that works best for the individual who is being coached at the time. We all have roadblocks towards achieving our goals and working with a coaching model and someone who can coach you is absolutely crucial to move beyond your current reality to achieve the life you wish to lead.
We are all different in our personalities and our drivers and our brains work differently from others, this is why it is best to work with many different coaching models.
The GROW model template is suited to GOAL Achievement
Once a person has found a coach or a mentor and the right coaching model the sky is the limit! Perhaps the GROW model could be the right model to use or perhaps not, generally, it works for most people although it is suited to achieving goals.
Certainly, some team members will find that GROW coaching works extremely well for them and others not so much. This is the way of the “coaching model” which is why there are so many models; there are so many different types of people.
With GROW coaching, the coach or chosen mentor within the business will help you to set goals and objectives for your business unit. You should be able to identify a person’s strengths and weaknesses as well as their needs.
The first step is about identifying what works best with how you learn which might include visualizing or listening. The next stage in understanding the GROW model of coaching is where we work on setting specific goals.
There are so many coaching models and GROW will work really well for most people.
Coaching models and frameworks have developed over the years and coaches, mentors and HR professionals have managed to develop a deep understanding of these models and the ones that work for the individuals they manage, mentor or coach.
Examples of other coaching models
SMART is another coaching model that will be covered by the Elite Coaches Club in future training: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. These types of realizable goals can then be broken down into Specific Action Steps (SAP) towards achieving them – these steps must also have deadlines attached to each one so that there is accountability within the process.
We will visit the SMART methodology in future posts and the positive and negatives of that and other coaching models and systems.
A coaching model can help in many ways. This is due to the nature of the framework, which clearly defines an objective at the beginning and forces participants to stay on topic.

An excellent way to bring the GROW Model to life is by thinking of taking on a new hobby. First, you identify the type of hobby you want- painting, cooking, or knitting(The Goal). Then, you establish what current knowledge that you have about this hobby – maybe none at all! ( The Reality) The next step is exploring the different ways in which to learn this hobby- self-taught? Classroom setting? There are lots of options for every person’s learning style. (The Options) Finally, once those initial steps are taken, and a decision is made, establishing a timeframe to complete and schedule the lessons can help keep you motivated (The Willingness/Way Forward).
You can use this simple yet powerful, deceptively simple model no matter what conversation it may be to get whatever result you desire out of your interactions! In addition to being useful in any conversation, meetings or even at work – I’ve found that many people use it as their go-to personal development method because it helps unlock potential by uncovering possibilities.
